Schools of the Past – 1940 Boljoon Escuela Catolica
This structure is one of the important buildings within the Boljoon Church Complex, which has been acclaimed as a National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines. Constructed in 1940, as indicated by the relief found at its center, this historic building once played a vital role in the religious and educational life of Boljoon. It was originally used for the catechism of children in the town, serving as a place where young parishioners were taught about the Catholic faith. In addition to this, the structure also functioned as a dormitory for children preparing for their confirmation, providing temporary lodging for those who came from distant barangays.
One of the structure’s most remarkable features is its twin symmetrical staircases, a design inspired by American-period architecture. This feature stands out within the otherwise predominantly Spanish-era complex. According to local tradition, the staircases were used to separate boys and girls as they entered and exited their classes, reflecting the moral and social customs of the time. Despite being built decades after the Spanish colonial period, the Escuela Catolica’s design still manages to maintain aesthetic harmony with the rest of the centuries-old complex. Its distinct yet complementary architecture adds character to the site, making it a symbolic link between two historical periods.
Situated prominently and visible from the national road, the building continues to draw attention from visitors and devotees alike. Today, the Escuela Catolica has found new purpose as the public library of Boljoon, continuing its long tradition of learning and community service. Inside, several pieces of antique furniture—believed to be remnants of church furnishings from the Spanish era—are still preserved, giving the interior an old-world charm. Because of its historical significance, unique architectural details, and scenic appeal, this place remains a favorite photo spot for tourists and heritage enthusiasts visiting Boljoon.
