The History of the Baluarte of Sogod

Sogod is a small town in the northern east area of Cebu. The town was established in 1842 and the Parish built in 1850. Two popular versions were told how the town got its name, that from a great religious happening and from a natural physical phenomenon. It is said that spread Christianity in northern Cebu started in Sogod and extended to the northernmost tip of Cebu Province. This is the history of the Sogod baluarte.

In front of the Santiago Apostol Church is a small Baluarte or Watchtower that was built in the 1850s to warn the town of pirate incursions of the northern areas of Cebu. The baluarte is Quadrilateral in shape with large crenelations at the corners, The height of this Baluarte is about 4 meters. The baluarte faces the sea and the view from the top is good. The Baluarte of Sogod is made of Coral stones and is now covered in Concrete to preserve the structure, but there are still pieces of Coral Stone in the area around. The Baluarte has survived the battles of the north during World War 2 the same could not be said about the Church.
