The Chapel by the River – Barangay Sabang Chapel, Siquijor

Among the many wonders, both historical and natural, of the enchanting island of Siquijor is one chapel by the river located in Barangay Sabang, Larena, Siquijor. The Chapel itself is of simple make; however, the location of the chapel is what makes the place unique. The small chapel is located by a winding river with waters of clear blue turquoise where one may spot fish swimming up and down; aside from these are a canopy of various different trees such as coconuts and acacias. Within the chapel also stands two antique images of St. Roch and St. Joseph probably dating from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.

According to the locals, the place has been inhabited by their ancestors for many years and was even once a site where they would gather to watch fireflies in the night as they came down from the tree during the past when the place was called “Canoan.” The name “Canoan” comes from when traders would seek shelter in the nearby bay and would eat together making the place a eating area or in Visayan, “Kan-Anan.”
