History and Heritage: Spanish Ruins of Aloguinsan

In the small town of Alonguinsan about 60 Kilometers southwest of Cebu City is a Watchtower/Baluarte which has been standing since the 19th Century.Without any indication of its existence a small great park and well maintained with its main attraction being a Baluarte which has been ruined. About half of its estimated height the baluarte has already been exposed very much to the elements. The top half of the structure has dissapeared. Though remnants of Wood emplacements still exist in the structure. The Structure is made of Batang Koral or Coral Stones mixed with Mortar the individual stones can be seen in the picture above. These watchtowers were used to Warn against Moro Pirates that come from Mindanao, This baluarte was most likely constructed through forced labor and was commissioned by Fran Julian Bermejo of Boljoon. Fray Julian Bermejo was the fore father of these Watchtowers all around the south of Cebu. This is an important part of Aloguinsan History.

Another structure exists it is either a fortified wall or a much more deteriorated baluarte The structure itself is just a single wall made of the same material.

The structures are now maintained with caretakers cleaning and maintaining the area everyday .Other areas in Cebu with these kinds of relics (Carcar,Alcoy,Boljoon…) with Baluartes in much better condition (Boljoon) though they are not well developed or not developed at all This is a great development but still isolated in Alonguinsan. In the history of Aloguinsan, this place was once called Baluarte Cantaycong.
